AVKO Educational Research Foundation

"AVKO is a non-profit organization, founded by Don McCabe, that specializes in teaching dyslexics how to read, write, spell and type. AVKO develops books and materials utilizing the multi-sensory approach (Audio, Visual, Kinesthetic, Oral) that can be used with anyone and by anyone. AVKO materials and methods are all common-sense and effective with those we have worked with: young and old, dyslexic and non-dyslexic. " AVKO website

As a member of the TOS Crew I was given a one-year membership (for free) to the AVKO Educational Research Foundation website in order to review the membership benefits.

I found that the $25.00 a year membership to be a very reasonable price for the materials offered to the members. Members have access to:

--25% discount on all printed materials, such as, Sequential Spelling Books

--6 audio workshops to download for free (or purchase on CD for $2.50 each) these downloads are:

*I Think My Child Might Be Dyslexic--Does it Matter?
*Spelling -- Accentuate the Positive; Eliminate the Negative
*The Mechanics of English Spelling
*Phonics -- The Most Misunderstood Approach to Teaching Reading
*Create Your Own Spelling Program That Really Works
*You Don't Need a Master's Degree to Teach Your Kids -- Just a Degree of Caring

They also offer downloads for the purpose of practicing reading comprehension; the categories to choose from are puns, quotations, stories, and humor. **I do have a caution about this part of the website, because some of these stories may not fit your family's idea of acceptable reading material, you may want to preview these first before you print them off for your child(ren)s reading lesson.**

In addition, you will find these free e-books:

*The Reading Teacher's List of Over 5,500 Basic Spelling Words
*The Patterns of English Spelling Volumes 1-10
*To Teach a Dyslexic
*The Teaching of Reading & Spelling: A Continuum from Kindergarten through College
*The Teaching of Reading & Spelling: Starting from Square One

With these materials that AVKO offers through the member website you could create your own spelling program, or you might like to use them in order to supplement your current spelling program. I think families who are already using Sequential Spelling would find this website to be very beneficial.

You will find free material to look at here; and samples of their materials to download here.

The materials on the AVKO Educational Research Foundation website do not meet my family's needs at this time, but I would recommend it to those who have a child with dyslexia or another learning disability, or to a family whose child simply struggles with spelling.

AVKO Educational Research Foundation offers a one-year membership for $25.00. If you would like to visit AVKO's website, please click here.
