Inescapable by Nancy Mehl~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

174886684-1

My Review:

Inescapable is the first book that I have read by Nancy Mehl, but it certainly will not be the last. The description of this book is what caught my interest. I have read books about the Amish for several years and I thought I would enjoy learning about the  Mennonites, as well. I was correct.  When you throw in some mystery and suspense it makes it a page turner that kept me up late into the night.

The story is told by Lizzie, the single mom of Charity. I immediately liked her and her daughter.  I thought Lizzie was courageous because she could have accepted the offer from her boyfriends' parents to abort her baby, but she didn’t. Instead she chose to raise her daughter. Due to her father’s disapproval, she left her home in Kingdom, to make a new life for herself and her daughter in Kansas City.

She found a job as a waitress shortly after she arrived in Kansas City where she learned a lot about the restaurant business.  After awhile she accepted a better paying job at Harbor House, a shelter for abused women. Lizzie earned her GED and was taking online college courses while holding a job and raising her daughter. However, life changed again for Lizzie when she was falsely accused of theft, and discovered that she was being stalked. Not knowing what to do, she decides to go back home to Kingdom, Kansas.

Her experience in the jobs that she held in Kansas City prepared her for helping Cora Menlo in running Cora's Corner Cafe, in exchange for room and board which included meals for her and Charity.

If you’re like me, you may find that there are times when you are scolding Charity, and telling her what she should do, but of course she won’t listen; adding more interest to the story.

I found the characters to be endearing, especially Cora Menlo, Ruth Fisher, and Noah Housler. I look forward to reading Unbreakable which is the next book in the Road to Kingdom series to discover more about them and to keep up with Lizzie and Charity.

About the Book:

Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, Kingdom, Kansas, with plans never to return.

But five years later, the new life she built is falling apart. Lizzie knows she's being followed, and she's certain the same mysterious stranger is behind the threatening letters she's received. Realizing she'll have to run again, the only escape Lizzie can manage is a return to the last place she wants to go.

Once she arrives in Kingdom, Lizzie is confident she'll be safe until she comes up with a new plan. In reacquainting herself with the town and its people--especially her old friend, Noah Housler--she wonders if she judged her hometown and her Mennonite faith too harshly. However, just as she begins to come to terms with her roots, Lizzie is horrified to discover the danger she ran from is closer than ever.

No longer sure who to trust and fearful for her life and the lives of those around her, Lizzie finds she has only one place left to run--to the Father whose love is inescapable.
