Courting Cate by Leslie Gould~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review Tour and Kindle Fire Giveaway

My Review:

Proverbs 30:21-23 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

21 The earth trembles under three things;
it cannot bear up under four:
22 a servant when he becomes king,
a fool when he is stuffed with food,
23 an unloved woman when she marries,
and a servant girl when she ousts her queen.

Courting Cate is a story that is loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. A story that will steal your heart, as it did mine. I loved Cate, and in many ways I identified with her.

At the age of 7, Cate Miller needed to give up a part of her childhood to become a substitute mother to her sister Betsy. She did the best she could, but she felt that she had lost her chance to be loved. This feeling was reinforced when the young men in her community passed her over for her pretty sister.

Betsy Miller, loves her sister, but treats her with disrespect, manipulating Cate into getting her own way. Her behavior became even worse when her father laid down an edict in which Cate must marry before Betsy could marry.

When Pete Treger came to town seeking a job in the cabinet shop that Cate’s father owns, Cate thought that Pete was interested in Betsy. But during an outing with other young people from her community, she decided that maybe Pete would be the one for her, until she stumbled upon a scheme where Pete was being paid to court her.

This story was excellently written. The characters were fully developed and with personalities that drew me further into the story. And who can pass up a story that is a timeless retelling of the Taming of the Shrew? I hadn’t read anything written by Leslie Gould before, and now I find myself looking forward to the next book in The Courtships of Lancaster County, Adoring Addie.

About Courting Cate:

When This Couple Gets to Courting, Sparks Will Fly!

In Paradise, Pennsylvania, Cate Miller is known more for her sharp tongue and fiery temper than her striking appearance. Her sweet and flirty sister, Betsy, on the other hand, seems to have attracted most of the bachelors in Lancaster County!

But the sisters’ wealthy father has made one hard-and-fast rule: older Cate must marry first, before younger Betsy can even start courting. Unfortunately, untamable Cate has driven away every suitor–until Pete Treger comes to town, that is.

Prodded by the men of the area, Pete turns his attention to winning Cate’s hand. But is his interest true or is there a scheme at play?

Book 1 in The Courtships of Lancaster County series.
