Beauty for Ashes by Dorothy Love~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

My Review:

Beauty for Ashes by Dorothy Love is the second book in the Hickory Ridge Romance series and the first book that I have read by Dorothy Love, although, it will not be the last. As I am already looking forward to the next book in this series, as well as, others from this author.

At first I was a little lost in the story because I hadn't read the first book in the series--Beyond All Measure--but I soon became familiar enough with the characters, and became engrossed in the story.

It had been Carrie and her brother, Henry, since their parents deaths. After her husband's death, Carrie had lived with her brother and helped with taking care of their farm. Things are changing though and Henry has married Mary, a women who can be mean-spirited and selfish, and she also has two young, undisciplined boys.

Carrie decides to move into town to make a new life for herself because she and Mary can't seem to get along. Carrie likes living in town, and the job that she has been given by Nate, the book-seller and the man she is courting. When she meets Griff Rutledge, after he saves her from being trampled by a runaway horse, she finds herself thinking about him, and enjoying the times they meet on the street.

Griff Rutledge is from North Carolina, and is in Hickory Ridge on personal business. He is also a horse trainer. After he saves Carrie from being trampled by Majestic, a spirited young Thoroughbred, he is asked by the towns banker to train Majestic, for the upcoming Race Week. Griff agrees, but he doesn't plan on staying in Hickory Ridge for long, as he has a wanderlust and wants to visit Australia, and maybe buy a horse farm there. Although Carrie has had warnings from her friends about spending time with Griff, she enjoys his company, and continues to see him.

When Mary has been put on bed rest, Carrie must return to the farm in order to help run the farm and to care for Mary and her boys while Henry is away working in Chicago for the railroad. It is hard for Carrie to return, but she does. During the time of Mary's confinement, Carrie begins to see Mary differently, and grows to love her boys, as well.

The story shows how people can grow and change when God is placed first in their lives. I found that some of the lessons Carrie was learning are some of the same that God is teaching me. Touching my heart even more.

I enjoyed Beauty of Ashes very much, and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

The Beautiful Wife by Sandy Ralya~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

 

My Review:

Are you married, or looking forward to the day that you will be? Planning for your wedding is the easy part, becoming one with your husband, well, that is a life long process. Sandra Ralya has written a devotional that is relevant to any women whether she is engaged, newly married or has been married a long time. I know I found this book helpful, and I have been married nearly 18 years.

The Beautiful Wife contains 12 meaty chapters that use examples from Sandra Ralya’s own experiences and include some of these topics: Prayer, Being Genuine, Mystique; Romance; Communication, and Speaking the Truth in Love. And it is filled with Bible references to make you think about your own situation. At the end of each chapter you will find journaling/discussion questions to help you to think through what you have learned.  

No matter how long you have been married, or how good your marriage is there is always room for improvement. So if you like Bible studies this might be one you would like to have on your coffee table, or night stand.

Companion Materials:

I also received the Prayer Journal and Mentor’s Guide from the publisher. each of these little books are a nice edition to The Beautiful Wife devotional.

The Prayer Journal has places to write down pray requests, your prayers, and the answers you have received. Places to write down the Bible verses you are learning, as well as, what you have learned from reading them. I think it would fit well into your daily study.

The Mentor’s Guide is a nice tool for Bible study group leaders. It includes everything you need to lead a group study, and whether you are an experienced leader or it is your first time to lead a Bible Study Group I think you will find it very helpful.

Sweeter Than Birdsong by Rosslyn Elliott~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

My Review:

Sweeter Than Birdsong by Rosslyn Elliott is the second in The Saddler’s Legacy, and is set mainly in Westerville, Ohio 1855. I haven’t read the first book in the series Fairer than Morning (although I would like to), but that didn’t seem to matter, because the author fills the reader in where it is needed.

Kate Winter's dreams of being one of the first women to graduate from Otterbein College, but she thinks this dream is lost when her fear of public speaking causes her to flee the classroom when it is her turn for oration. Another of her dreams is to make a new home for her sister Leah, somewhere safe. A place where their father can’t hurt them, and her mother’s words won’t tear them down. 

Kate and Ben are classmates and friends, and at Ben’s request Kate reluctantly joins the musicale that he is producing. When Kate’s friend, Cornelia Lawrence is scheduled to play at Neil House in Columbus, Mrs. Lawrence invites her to join them and the Hanby’s for their trip. Kate decides that this would be a good time to find a place for her and Leah to go. Little did she know that she would be so changed by the trip, as she helps the Hanby’s as they try to lead some slaves toward freedom.

Rosslyn’s writing is powerful, and draws the reader into the story. I loved the way Kate and Ben’s story leapt off the page. The scenes, sounds and characters came alive and also becomes a part of the reader. I will choose to read other books by this author, but look forward to the next book in this series, if there is one, and I hope there is, because I closed the book wanting to read more about Kate and Ben.

This story is based on the true accounts of Kate Winter and Ben Hanby. If you choose to read this book please don’t skip the historical note at the end where you will be able to learn more about these true people from history.

If you like Rosslyn Elliott’s books, and/or historical fiction I am certain you will also like Sweeter Than Birdsong.

I give Sweeter than Birdsong 5 out of 5 stars.

Beyond Molasses Creek By Nicole Seitz~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

 

 

My Review:

When I began reading Beyond Molasses Creek by Nicole Seitz red flags began waving at me. From the start the mention of gods and stone statues made me wonder if a book, that is marketed as a Christian book, is going to have any redemptive qualities; if the Gospel is going to be laid out before the characters, and thus the reader. It wasn't. Therefore the book, to me, is more a secular book than a Christian one.

That being said, I did like the characters. I felt bad for Ally, it seemed her life had included a lot of loss. Growing up in the south in the 1950’s and 60’s, when the climate was very cool, even at times hostile against white and black being friends. Ally befriends, Vesey Washington, a boy who lives across the Molasses Creek from her, a life long friend, but out of reach.

She suffers the loss of a child. The death of her parents. The death of who she could have been.

She collected statues of foreign gods, and angels during her years of travels, and had them set up in the yard of her childhood home after the death of her father. She would go out to find comfort in her garden of statues, but of course there wasn’t any comfort there, it can only be found in the One True God of the Bible.

I give Beyond Molasses Creek by Nicole Seitz  3.5 stars out of 5, I thought Nicole’s descriptions were very good and I could see the scenes and the people within the pages.  If this book was marketed as a secular book I would give it a better rating than I am able to knowing that it is in the Christian market.

The Sound of Red Returning by Sue Duffy~~ A LitFuse Book Review

My Review:

If you grew-up during the 60’s. 70’s or the 80’s then you, like me remember the cold war. I can remember the fear of nuclear weapons being sent across the sea, and I also remember when the Berlin Wall fell and the end the of the threat of the cold war.

The Sound of Red Returning brings the suspense of the cold war to the forefront of my mind. The CIA and KGB are still trying to keep and retrieve national secrets in order to maintain security, and the world I grew-up in still exists.

I enjoyed this story very much, The characters are very likable and and I fell in love with them right away. Ian O’Brian adds humor into the tenseness of some of the scenes. while Cade O’Brian brings Liesl someone to open her heart to.The story is fast-paced, with a lot of twists and turns which kept me guessing what would happen next.

I give the book 5 out of 5 stars and am looking forward to the next book in the Red Returning Trilogy.

Remembering You by Tricia Goyer--A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

My Review:

Remembering You is a story where past and present come together and take the reader on an incredible journey through Europe.  Ava, her Grandpa Jack, and his friend whom Ava fondly calls, Grand-Paul, visit battle sites as they retrace the route these men took during World War II.

Through her research, and interviews with World War II veterans Tricia Goyer honors these veterans by using their stories to create stories like Remembering You, Stories I think many readers will enjoy, especially those who enjoy history. I may never be able to visit Europe myself, but Tricia Goyer’s descriptions made me feel that I was there experiencing the journey with the characters.

I loved the characters in this story, they were so real that they leapt off the page. I watched them grow with each new experience, and as they learned more about each other. They learned  forgiveness, compassion, to listen, and to accept each other as they are. They also grew in their love of God.

I enjoyed learning about World War II, and the battles that the characters fought in. Tricia Goyer did an excellent  job in combining contemporary times and history together to create a wonderful story that I will read again, and have already recommended to my husband, because he also likes to read about World War II.

I would recommend  Remembering You for readers high-school to adult.
