My Review:

A Book Worth Reading Again

Lydia Wyse returned to West Kootenai, Montana after her mother’s death; although she was only planning to stay long enough to make sure her father would be okay. Her plans began to change when her father gave her a box her mother had left for her. Inside the box, Lydia found written prayers and promises from the Bible that were special to her mother and as Lydia read them she began to see the love and hope she had for her. As she read the promises and begins to become acquainted with the people of West Kootenai, she begins to feel drawn to this community.

Gideon Hooley is one of the bachelors who had come to West Kootenai for the hunting, but he is also hoping to find answers to something that had happened many years ago when he was a little boy.

Lydia and Gideon met when she returned for her mother’s funeral. Neither of them expected any type of friendship, because she was English and he was Amish. They each discover that God hasn’t abandoned them as their story is told in only the way that Tricia can—with plenty of God’s truths gently woven through.

The Promise Box is a book that I plan to read again; because the story held truth that I needed to hear as much as Lydia and Gideon.

**A Story That Stole My Heart**

Love Finds You in Glacier Bay, Alaska contains two stories that intertwine. Ginny Marshall has had a rough life. She was abandoned by her mother at a young age, raised in California’s foster care system, and had been bounced from home to home. She is now an up and coming musician, who is running from all of the pain from her past… loss, abuse, and a broken heart.

Ellie’s story begins in 1928 and intertwines with Ginny’s in the form of letters written in the early years of Glacier Bay. Her life also was filled with hurt, loss and, disappointment. She is also looking for security, certainty, and surety. As both stories unfold, parallels do, too. Both accounts woven together into beautiful stories of hope, redemption and pure love.

Ginny has been presented with a music contract that any musician would be overjoyed to sign. As appealing the offer is, she finds herself needing to seek advice from someone who has her best interest at heart. She heads to Glacier Bay, Alaska to find her former beau, Brett Miller, the only person she feels that will give her the sound advice she needs. She learns that she is really seeking closure.

Ellie, whose life was unexpectedly turned upside down, retreated to Strawberry Point (which has later renamed Glacier Bay) for an entirely different reason. She was seeking employment as a governess for a widowed minister, his four children, and his nephew. Her arrival was unexpected, and she didn’t feel welcomed. Her faith, determination and sense of responsibility kept her serving this hurting family, even as she was being pushed away.

The authors, Tricia and Ocieanna, have beautifully woven these lives, who lived nearly 100 years apart, together into  this hard-to-put-down modern-day romance. Both of the characters grew and developed chapter by chapter; from being insecure and unsure about life, and  about themselves, to having a confidence only God can give.

Christmas Mourning

As I sat in our living room last Christmas morning, there was a pile of presents under the tree. A smile filled my face, just thinking about the joy and laughter that would fill the house in a few hours when we gathered around to hear the Christmas story, worship Jesus, and open presents.

That morning as I thought about the celebration of our Lord's birth, my mind was already busy unwrapping. No, I wasn't thinking ahead to presents. Instead, I was unwrapping the many memories of Christmas that I carry on my heart.

I remember sitting at the kids' table in Grandma's mobile home, laughing and goofing around with my brother and cousins. I remember the doll house my Grandpa made when I was seven and the loving care my grandma took to decorate it.

I remember the boom box and banana clips from high school and my first Christmas with my son Cory not long after I turned eighteen. Cory was only six months old, but the greatest gift God gave to both of us that year was John—my soon-to-be husband and Cory's soon- to-be daddy.

There are memories of the kids acting out the Christmas story and Goyer family gatherings in which forty of us would eat in our cleaned-out and heated garage because it was the only place big enough to set up tables and chairs for everyone.

I also will never forget the first time I celebrated Christmas in California with my biological dad and the four sisters I didn't know growing up. I had a happy heart that day, being with people I didn't know well but who amazingly looked and acted just like me. How cool is that?!

As I write this, there are faces going to be missing around the tree, to be sure. There's always a sense of missing when the people you love are far away. And that's when Christmas Morning becomes Christmas Mourning. I'm thinking of my mom, dad, siblings, in-laws, and friends, wishing I could fill me house with their faces, their smiles, their laughter. I'm sure you understand.

It's so easy to center Christmas around the baby who God sent, but we cannot forget the purpose for His coming. Jesus' mission wasn't just about the manager, the angels, and the swaddling clothes. His purpose was to offer himself so that we can spend eternity with Him and those we love.

The greatest gift is one we've yet to open. Salvation comes to our hearts when we whisper a prayer of faith and relinquishment—when we give up the right to ourselves.

Like a beautifully wrapped presents under the tree, the best part of the gift is still to come. My mind is anticipating the unwrapping. I can only guess of the joy and laughter to come!

The Memory Jar by Tricia Goyer

My Review:

This moment is the most important one of all. We can either enjoy it, and the people we are with; or we can wish for something from the past back, or want to rush into the future. But then we miss the gifts that are here...in this moment. 

Sarah Shelter misses her best friend, Patty, who two years before drowned in a boating accident. Sarah learned a lot about life from Patty, and she is the one who helped to start Sarah’s interest in making memory jars. Sarah keeps little trinkets that she has collected to help her remember special times. These memories, especially the ones she made with Patty, Sarah holds outside of herself; in her jars.

As a way to deal with her grief, Sarah turned to her baking, and works at the West Kootenai Kraft and Grocery as one of their bakers. She finds solace in baking things, especially cupcakes, that make people smile. Sarah also has a dream, a dream that Patty had encouraged, which is to own her own bakery one day. But her Mem wants her to focus on finding a husband and becoming a good Amish wife. 

Jathan Schrock (one of the bachelors who is visiting West Kootenai, Montana on a hunting trip) has his own issues from the past that he needs to deal with. He also would like to have his own business, and a wife and kids someday, but he knows that it is his duty as the youngest son to support his aging parents.

The Memory Jar by Tricia Goyer is a sweet story that contains both a love for  God's creation, as well as a message of how God can heal broken hearts when we let him. Jathan and Sarah are both well-developed characters; who had endured themselves to my heart. Tricia has done a wonderful job of depicting the Amish way of life in the first book of her new series Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors; which captivated me from the first page to the last. A very enjoyable story. I now look forward to the next book, The Promise Box.

My Review:

By the Light of the Silvery Moon by Tricia Goyer was a book I looked forward to reading and I wasn’t disappointed.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking on April 10th, I wonder what that time was like. What were the hopes and dreams of the passengers and the crew. Many of those stories are gone forever. Tricia Goyer, wrote a story of what might have been.

Although I enjoyed the story I was conflicted with wanting to put the book down and not read further and continuing reading to the end of the story. The reason? I was caring for the characters more and more and knowing what happened to the real Titanic I didn’t want to know who didn’t survive, but I did continue to the end, because I really wanted to know what would happen.

There is a strong Prodigal son theme, as well as, God’s plan of redemption within the pages of this book. Quentin Walpole is the Prodigal. His mother drowned saving him from drowning when he was 5 years old. He had been running and hiding ever since. When he became an adult, he asked his father for his inheritance and moved to London to begin a business of his own, his business did well for a time, but when competition moved in, he lost it all: his business, money, home, friends, and he lived homeless for two years.

Amelia Gladstone has a giving heart and serves God by serving others. While she and her Aunt Neda are preparing to board the Titanic, Amelia sees some of the stewards roughly taking a man off the ship. She has an extra ticket that was for her cousin, who wasn’t able to travel, so Amelia gave the ticket to Quentin.

Clarence  and Damien Walpole-- Quentin’s father, and brother, are also on the ship. Clarence prays daily for his son and hopes that someday he will return home. Damien wishes his brother will never return.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Family Traditions: A Glimpse into Christmas Future

Have you ever thought about family traditions? As I helped my 1-year-old place ornaments on the Christmas tree this year I imagined her doing the same thing with her children—and maybe even grandchildren—one day. Traditions are beliefs and customs handed down through generations. By sharing meaningful moments with your kids you're sending yourself into the future. How amazing is that?

Sharing family traditions cause us to slow down from the busy, adult world for a while. We ignore the laundry to set out the nativity set with our kids. We set aside time in our schedules to drive around and look at Christmas lights.

Holiday traditions aren't only fun, they also help strength family bonds. Through traditions kids trust in the security of family unit. They think, “This is our family and this is what I do.” Of course, the most important thing to share isn't just what we do ... but why. Why do we put out a nativity? To remind us the real meaning of the season—Jesus coming to earth. What do the Christmas lights represent displayed on homes and on trees? They represent the Light of the World, Jesus.

Using traditions to bond our families and share our faith isn't new. I love these two Scriptures that talk about that very thing.

Exodus 12:25 says, “When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony.”

Psalm 78:4 says, “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

What are you're traditions? Here are a few of ours:
Baking a Birthday cake for Jesus
Buying a new ornament every year for each child
Acting out the Christmas story (with props!)
Praying together before opening presents

What are your traditions? Write a list and appreciate them in a new way this year. Then ask, “If I could add one new tradition this holiday season, what would it be?” I'd love to hear what you choose! It also makes me smile to think of your children's grandchildren doing the same.

Remembering You by Tricia Goyer--A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review

 

About the book:

35-year-old Ava Andrews' dream job is interrupted by an unusual request--fulfill her 84-year-old grandfather's last wish by joining him on a battle site tour of Europe. Ava is sure her boss will refuse her request. But, instead, he gives her a directive of his own--to videotape the tour and send it back as mini-segments for the show she produces.

As if juggling these two things isn't hard enough, Ava is soon surprised again ... twice. First, Ava and Grandpa Jack arrive in Europe, only to discover the tour is cancelled. Unwilling to let down her grandfather or her boss, Ava and Grandpa Jack head out on their own. Then, while they're on their way, the pair soon meet up with Paul, her grandpa's best friend, and his grandson Dennis. The same Dennis who just happens to be Ava's first love.

Before she knows it, Ava and Dennis are swept down memory lane as they visit the sites that are discussed in the history books. And even though Ava's videotaping old soldiers, she can see their youth, their hopes and fears, and their pride in their eyes. Soon Ava learns the trip isn't just for them ... it's for her too--especially for her heart.

My Review:

Remembering You is a story where past and present come together and take the reader on an incredible journey through Europe.  Ava, her Grandpa Jack, and his friend whom Ava fondly calls, Grand-Paul, visit battle sites as they retrace the route these men took during World War II.

Through her research, and interviews with World War II veterans Tricia Goyer honors these veterans by using their stories to create stories like Remembering You, Stories I think many readers will enjoy, especially those who enjoy history. I may never be able to visit Europe myself, but Tricia Goyer’s descriptions made me feel that I was there experiencing the journey with the characters.

I loved the characters in this story, they were so real that they leapt off the page. I watched them grow with each new experience, and as they learned more about each other. They learned  forgiveness, compassion, to listen, and to accept each other as they are. They also grew in their love of God.

I enjoyed learning about World War II, and the battles that the characters fought in. Tricia Goyer did an excellent  job in combining contemporary times and history together to create a wonderful story that I will read again, and have already recommended to my husband, because he also likes to read about World War II.

I would recommend  Remembering You for readers high-school to adult.
