All My Belongings by Cynthia Ruchti~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and A $200 Visa cash card Giveaway

A Place to Call Home

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Proverbs 13:12 (ESV)

After Jayne Dennagee's father was convicted of murder, Jayne wanted to distance herself from him, her hometown, and the undeserved reputation that had been thrust upon her. To that end she legally changed her name to Becca Morrow. With the help of her friend, Geneva Larkin, she was hired as a caretaker of a lovely lady named Auleria Hughes. In order to take the job, Becca moved halfway across the country to LaVida, California, all the while hoping that her father's reputation wouldn't catch up with her.

I loved the genuineness that flowed through this story. Becca's heart-wrenching sorrow, as well as her love for Geneva and Auleria. It is a story that could have been ripped from the headlines, but offers love and forgiveness. The realness of the characters and the situations drew me in and kept me between the pages until I closed the cover on a well told story.

About the Book:

All My Belongings

A new life and a new identity can’t protect Becca from a past that refuses to go away.

After spending years running from the shame her father put on her family, Jayne is determined not to let him steal her future in the same way he stole her childhood. Changing her name to Becca Morrow, she moves to California and settles into a new life and new job caring for ailing mother of handsome young businessman, Isaac Hughes.

But just as she’s wondering if she and Isaac are headed for a relationship, Becca’s patient passes away under unusual circumstances. Suddenly, her past catches up with her and the unnerving details of her heritage threaten to destroy all sense of home and all hope for love.

Even if she could clear her name, a phone call wraps a suffocating shroud around her heart. Her estranged father needs her help. But can Becca open her new life to the man who ruined her past?

Critical Condition by Richard L. Mabry, M.D~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and Kindle Fire HDX Giveaway

Diagnosis Murder?

Dr. Shannon Fraiser and her guests, Dr. Mark Gilbert, Shannon’s “almost fiancé,” and Ann Kai, were in the middle of their celebration party honoring the newest graduate from Southwestern Medical School residency program, Dr. Le Duan (Lee) Kai. When she heard what sounded like three firecrackers being set off, Shannon decided to check and see what was happening and discovered what looked like a pile of old clothes. Only it wasn't old clothes, but an injured man. She quickly realized that the man had been shot and was bleeding profusely and that she was helpless to save him. The man was mumbling something unintelligible before he died. Instantly the scene was déjà vu to Shannon and she felt defeat once more as the decade old memory of her former fiancé Todd Gunderson crumpled at her feet from a gunshot wound and died before her eyes. Todd's death turned her future upside-down, by ending their plans of a life together.

It seemed that Dr. Frasier’s troubles kept multiplying. Her sister, Megan, who had been recently released from rehab, moved in with her, ... but only until she could find a job, and an apartment. Megan also was keeping secrets and fleeing from an abusive relationship. Then Megan was arrested as a suspect in the victim’s murder, as well as, a suspect to her former boyfriend's murder. In addition to all of this were the mysterious and threatening phone calls that Shannon received demanding to know what the dying man had said to her.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough as I read this mystery/thriller by Dr. Mabry. I just had to find out who had committed the crimes and why? Were Shannon and Megan involved, or just convenient scapegoats? I won't reveal the answers so that you will enjoy finding out for yourself when you read Critical Condition.

About the Book:

Dr. Frasier couldn’t save the gunshot victim on her front lawn. Now she’s fighting for her own life.
It began as a quiet dinner party honoring Dr. Shannon Frasier’s colleague, but became a nightmare when a man was shot on her lawn, reviving emotions from a similar episode a decade ago. Then a midnight call from her sister, Megan, causes Shannon to fear that her sister is on drugs again.
Her “almost-fiancé” Dr. Mark Gilbert’s support only adds to Shannon’s feelings of guilt, since she can’t bring herself to fully commit to him. She turns for help to her pastor-father, only to learn that he’s just been diagnosed with leukemia.
Shannon thought it couldn’t get any worse. Then the late-night, threatening phone calls begin, the rough voice asking, “What did he say before he died?”

With everything around her in a critical state, simply staying alive will require all the resources and focus Shannon has.

Dancing with Fireflies by Denise Hunter~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and Kindle HDX Giveaway

Learning to Dance Again

Dancing with Fireflies by Denise Hunter in the second book in the A Chapel Hill Springs Romance series. The first was Barefoot in Summer.

Denise Hunter is one of my favorite Contemporary Christian authors. She has a way of drawing the reader in and keeping her through the last page.

Jade McKinley left her home in Chapel Springs, Indiana wanting a fresh start and needing to escape the painful memories of her past. She hadn't planned to return. However, nearly a year later she finds herself pregnant, and penniless, with nowhere to go but home. Nevertheless, she has decided to do whatever it takes to stand on her own two feet and take care of her baby.

Jade knows going home isn’t going to be easy. In fact, going home pregnant could hurt someone very dear to her. Which is one of the reasons she tries to hide her pregnancy, if only temporarily, from her family and friends.

Daniel Dawson has loved Jade for years. But, he is an honorary member of the McKinley family which puts him in the “brother zone.” When Jade left, Daniel's feelings were crushed, but now that she has returned, his heart is once again in danger. What's worse, she asks him to find and set her up with men that he would approve of for dates. Against his better judgment, he agrees. Although, he was planning to keep an eye on his competition. Behind Jade’s strange request, Daniel discovers Jade's secret, and he is determined to walk by her side, despite the cost to himself and his heart. As Daniel renews his friendship with Jade, old emotions awaken while faith and trust are pushed to the limit as his own insecurities and fears bubble to the surface.

Daniel is the Knight-in-Shining-Armor every little girl dreams of. He is loving, protective, and loyal. Jade, despite experiencing the unthinkable manages to find the strength to overcome and shines. I was transfixed to the pages of this book from beginning to end, as I read Jade and Daniel's story.

Dancing with Fireflies is truly a story that brings beauty for ashes to both Jade and Daniel! I loved returning to Chapel Springs and spending time getting re-acquainted with the McKinley family, as well as getting to know the characters that I fell in love with in the first book of the series, Barefoot Summer better. I highly recommend this series, to fans of Denise Hunter, as well as anyone who enjoys true Christian Fiction.

About the Book:

A Chapel Springs Romance

Jade returns home to Chapel Springs after years of protecting her fragile heart. Then along comes Daniel, making her long to dance again.

Creative and complicated, Jade McKinley felt like a weed in a rose garden growing up in Chapel Springs. When she left, she thought she’d never look back. But now, pregnant, alone, and broke, she has no other choice but to return.

The mayor of Chapel Springs, Daniel Dawson, has been an honorary member of the McKinley family for years. While his own home life was almost non-existent, Daniel fit right into the boisterous McKinley family. He’s loved Jade for years, but she always saw him as a big brother. Now that she’s back, his feelings are stronger than ever.

As Jade attempts to settle in, nothing feels right. God seems far away, she’s hiding secrets from her family, and she’s strangely attracted to the man who’s always called her “squirt.” Finding her way home may prove more difficult than she imagined.

It Had to Be You by Susan May Warren~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and $100 Visa Cash Card Giveaway!

It Had to Be You will touch your heart!

I have positively fallen in love with the Christiansen Family series! It Had to Be You is a fabulous addition and I had a hard time putting it down once I started reading it! Susan May Warren did a wonderful job creating realistic characters that are flawed, yet likeable. And although I am not a hockey fan, I found this setting to be dangerous, and exciting at the same time.

Eden and Jace are like night and day, and seem like an unlikely match right from the start. One of the best things about this book (as well as the series, so far) is that the main characters must step back and take a good long look at themselves to learn who they really are. Eden Christiansen was very biased about Jace which was mostly based upon the media's persona of him, not who he was through Christ. I loved seeing him through her eyes, while also knowing his point of view, as well. Jace also has biased opinions about Eden, as well, mostly based on how she interacts with and protects her younger brother, Owen. I loved watching as Eden and Jace slowly discovered that their original opinions about each other were incorrect. As their relationship developed they had to weather many storms that threatened to end it before it began.

Jace, tagged as hockey's bad boy, is carrying a lot baggage from his past. Although he is a major hockey star, he sees himself as a failure and really would like to lose his bad boy image. Although I am not a sports fan, I appreciated that Susan explained the game of hockey so that people like me can understand what was going on out on the ice.

Eden's brother, Owen, has a lot of growing-up to do and is facing a lot of "hard-knocks" as he does. I am looking forward to see how Susan grows him up as the Christiansen Family series continues. I also enjoyed getting to know Sam and his daughter, Maddie. It Had to Be You is chock full of interesting characters whose stories beg to be told.

The book includes the prequel to this series titled I Really Do Miss Your Smile. It is John and Ingrid Christiansen's (parents of Derek, Eden, Grace, Owen, Amelia, and Casper Christiansen) story of how they met and made a life together. Even though it is only a novella, it is a powerful love story. I have enjoyed each book of this series so far, and I am really looking forward to the third book in the series, When I Fall in Love, which will center on Grace Christiansen.

About the Book:

A Christiansen Family Novel

Eden Christiansen never imagined her role as her younger brother Owen’s cheerleader would keep her on the sidelines of her own life. Sure, it feels good to be needed, but looking after the reckless NHL rookie leaves little time for Eden to focus on her own career. She dreamed of making a name for herself as a reporter, but is stuck writing obits—and starting to fear she doesn’t have the chops to land a major story. If only someone would step up to mentor Owen . . . but she knows better than to expect help from team veteran and bad-boy enforcer Jace Jacobsen.

Jace has built his career on the infamous reputation of his aggressive behavior—on and off the ice. Now at a crossroads about his future in hockey, that reputation has him trapped. And the guilt-trip he’s getting from Eden Christiansen isn’t making things any easier. But when Owen’s carelessness leads to a career-threatening injury and Eden stumbles upon a story that could be her big break, she and Jace are thrown together . . . and begin to wonder if they belong on the same team after all.

Distortion by Terri Blackstock~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and Kindle Fire HDX Giveaway

Distortion is the first book that I have read by Terri Blackstock and my first thought after I finished it was "WOW!".

From the first to the last page, Distortion takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride full of suspense. As the plot unfolds, there are more questions than answers, which kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next.

While the novel is highly suspenseful, what I liked most was the focus on family. Distortion is the second book in Terri Blackstock's Moonlighters series and centers on siblings Jay, Juliet, Cathy, and Holly. They are a close knit family whose love and commitment to each other shines throughout the book.

Even though this book did well as a stand-alone, I did find myself wishing that I had read the first book in the series, Truth Stained Lies, so that I would have had a better understanding of what had happened within it's pages.

I also enjoyed the way the character's faith is portrayed in this novel. The author did a superb job of showing how doubt and anger can and does impact a Christian's spiritual walk as Juliet and her siblings deal with the aftermath of her husband's death.

Would I read another of Terri Blackstock's books? Most definitely! I am looking forward to the next book book in the Moonlighters series, but in the meantime I just might read Truth Stained Lies and then re-read Distortion.

About the Book:

Juliet Cole’s life has been dismantled by the murder of her husband. She doesn’t know who—or what—to trust when everything she has believed to be true about her marriage has been a lie.

A husband’s lies can have deadly consequences.

When Juliet Cole’s husband of fifteen years is murdered before her eyes, she thinks it was a random shooting. Devastated and traumatized, she answers hours of questioning, then returns home to break the tragic news to her boys. But a threatening voicemail takes this from a random shooting to a planned, deliberate attack.

Juliet realizes that she and her children are in danger too, unless she meets the killers’ demands. But as she and her sisters untangle the clues, her husband’s dark secrets come to light. The more she learns, the more of her life is dismantled. Was her husband an innocent victim or a hardened criminal?

Princess Ever After by Rachel Hauck~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and A $200 Visa Cash Card Giveaway

A Delightful Modern Day Fairy Tale

Princess Ever After by Rachel Hauck is the second book in A Royal Wedding Book series. Even though I haven't read the first book in the series, Once Upon a Prince, I found that this book truly can be read as a stand alone.
Did you enjoy fairy tales when you were young? I did, in fact, I still do enjoy them at times. Princess Ever After is a delightful modern day fairy tale for grown-ups.

Regina Beswick lives in Tallahassee, Florida, and restores old cars. This is what she feels she was born to do and loves her job! Then one day, Tanner Burkhardt, Minister of Culture, from a tiny North Sea island called Hessenberg, shows up at her shop. He informs her she is the heir to the tiny kingdom and must come with him to Hessenberg in the next day or two. What is she to think? How can she just leave everybody and everything she knows to go off into an unknown future?

Watching Regina come to the realization that the information that Tanner brings is legitimate and that she is desperately needed in Hessenburg was enjoyable. I especially liked watching the relationship grow between them once Regina arrives in Hessenburg and begins learning about her heritage.

There are some interesting twists and turns and flash backs to journal entries written by Regina's grandmother, when she was a young lady, throughout the book, that enhances the story even more. Princess Ever After is a sweet and romantic fairy tale that was enjoyable to read.

Rachel Hauck created characters that are real and vibrant. She did this so well that, only a few pages into the book, I felt that I knew them intimately. I also enjoyed that Rachel's characters displayed their faith in God and relied on Him to make both small and big decisions.

About the Book:

A Royal Wedding Book # 2

Regina Beswick was born to be a princess.

But she’s content to be a small-town girl, running a classic auto restoration shop, unaware a secret destiny awaits her. One that will leap from the pages of her grandmother’s hand-painted book of fairytales.

Tanner Burkhardt is the stoic Minister of Culture for the Grand Duchy of Hessenberg. When he is tasked to retrieve the long-lost princess, he must overcome his fear of failure in order to secure his nation’s future—and his own.

Yet lurking in the political shadows is a fierce opponent with sinister plans to abolish the throne forever. Overwhelmed with opposition, Regina must decide if she’s destined to restore old cars or an ancient nation. Together—with a little divine intervention—Regina and Tanner discover the truth of her heritage and the healing power of true love.

God was going to save her marriage, Allison was sure of it. But neither her husband nor her marriage had been saved.

What had become of His promise?

Tony Kavanagh had been Allison’s dream-come-true. They were in love within days, engaged within weeks, married and pregnant within a year. Her cup bubbled over with joy . . . but years later, that joy had been extinguished by unexpected trials.

The day Allison issued her husband an ultimatum, she thought it might save him. She never expected he would actually leave. She was certain God had promised to heal; it was clear that she’d misunderstood.

Now, living in the quiet mountain cabin she inherited from her single, self-reliant Great Aunt Emma, Allison must come to terms with her grief and figure out how to adapt to small town life. But when she finds a wedding dress and a collection of journals in Emma’s attic, a portrait of her aunt emerges that takes Allison completely by surprise: a portrait of a heartbroken woman surprisingly like herself.

As Allison reads the incredible story of Emma’s life in the 1920s and 1930s, she is forced to ask a difficult question: Does she really surrender every piece of her life to the Lord?

Drawing from her own heart-wrenching story of redemption, A Promise Kept is Robin Lee Hatcher’s emotionally charged thanksgiving to a God who answers prayers—in His own time and His own ways.

Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and KINDLE HDX Giveaway

A intriguing debut!

Katherine Reay's debut novel is the story of Samantha (Sam) Moore, which is told in letters written to Mr. Knightley, the anonymous benefactor who granted Sam a full scholarship to graduate school. His only stipulation? That she write him a weekly letter, as if she were addressing a diary, and mail them to him. His promise to her was that he would never write back to her or seek her out.

Sam, who loves to write and who needs a confidante, begins to write to Mr. Knightley. As she writes, the reader is drawn into Sam's world getting to know her on an intimate level,  learning why she closed her heart to those whose only goal was to love her.

As a way to protect her heart, Sam hides behind the characters in her books. She fears that if she is real and reveals her true feelings she'll be completely rejected and that her heart will shatter. I am sure that each of us felt like this at one time or another.

I enjoyed getting to know Sam as I read her letters which contained everything from everyday life to real, heart-wrenching events. I enjoyed watching her grow from hiding behind her favorite book characters to being open with the people she came in contact with. You may think that it would be awkward to read a book that is composed entirely by letters, it wasn't that way for me, after the first few pages I had become so immersed in Sam's story that the letters faded into the background as she poured her heart onto the paper.

I enjoyed meeting other characters, too. I wondered who Mr. Knightley was and wondered which character he could possibly be. I enjoyed meeting Father John, Hannah, Kyle, Alex Powell, the Muirs and watching her friendships slowly blossom with some of her classmates. I even grew to love her seemingly harsh journalism professor, who saw Sam's potential and pushed her further than she thought she could go.

I laughed and cried with Sam as she struggled and fought to find her voice in her writing, and as she works through her hurts of the past to become the women that Father John, her journalism professor, and the others knew she could become.

When this book came up for review, I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it, because honestly, I wasn't sure I'd like it. I also was intrigued by the blurb so I took a chance, now I am glad that I decided to request Dear Mr. Knightley, I would have missed a great book if I hadn't.

About the Book:

Samantha Moore has always hidden behind the words of others—namely her favorite characters in literature. Now, she will learn to write her own story—by giving that story to a complete stranger.

Growing up orphaned and alone, Sam found her best friends in the works of Austen, Dickens, and the Brontë sisters. The problem is that she now relates to others more comfortably as Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Eyre than as herself.

Sometimes we lose ourselves in the things we care about most.

But life for this twenty-three-year-old is about to get stranger than fiction, when an anonymous benefactor (calling himself “Mr. Knightley”) offers to put Sam through the prestigious Medill School of Journalism. There is only one catch: Sam must write frequent letters to the mysterious donor, detailing her progress.

As Sam’s program and peers force her to confront her past, she finds safety in her increasingly personal letters to Mr. Knightley. And when Sam meets eligible, best-selling novelist Alex Powell, those letters unfold a story of love and literature that feels as if it’s pulled from her favorite books. But when secrets come to light, Sam is – once again – made painfully aware of how easily trust can be broken.

Reay’s debut novel follows one young woman’s journey as she sheds her protective persona and embraces the person she was meant to become.

A Marriage in Middlebury by Anita Higman ~~A Litfuse Publicity Group Book Review, Blog Tour and A Double Kindle Fire Giveaway

Enjoy Your Visit to Middlebury

I have a new favorite author and her name is Anita Higman. She introduced me to the town of Middlebury, which sits off the Texas coast and whose residents like to gather at the Rose Cottage Tea Room. The Rose Cottage Tea Room is owned by Charlotte Rose Hill.

Charlotte enjoys running her tea room, getting to know her patrons and preparing her specially designed tea for them. She was content, or so she thought, until her first and only love, Sam Wilder, walked into her tea room.
Sam had returned to Middlebury because his father was very ill, and wasn't expected to live very much longer. When his father requested to talk to Charlotte, Sam makes a trip to Rose Cottage Tea Room.

In a matter of hours Charlotte learns that Sam is engaged to be married to Audrey, and after an unpleasant talk with Sam's father, the reason she was told nearly 20 years before, in no uncertain terms, not to marry Sam. Although she thought her heart had mended, it was broken once again, as a result of this news.

As a way to put the past behind her, Charlotte agrees to cater Sam and Audrey's wedding. Will Charlotte be able to keep her agreement , or will past feelings interfere?

A Marriage in Middlebury is delightful and I fell in love with the town, it's people, and their stories. I commend the way Anita revealed Mr. Wilder's reasons for preventing Sam and Charlotte from marrying, although I wholeheartedly disagreed with him. I won't ruin the story for you, but, I was happy that Charlotte was able to see the truth and forgive him despite her heartbreak.

The people of Middlebury weren't perfect and neither were  their relationships, but they chose to love and accept each other for who they were, and not for who they hoped they would be.

If you enjoy romance and meeting everyday people, then I recommend a trip to Middlebury. I must warn you though, you may just find that you want to stay. And, if you do visit, please say hello for me.
